What NOT to do when making a web page

WebSiteClassroom.com

1: DO NOT WRITE IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, AS IT'S TOO HARD TO READ. Always use one of the default fonts when putting text on your web site. The two most common are NEW TIMES ROMAN and ARIAL. If you use some exotic font, you risk that the person looking at your web site does not have that font on his computer.

2: Keep images to a minimum and "always" keep the file size as small as possible.  Huge files TAKE TIME TO LOAD. There are several fine programs available to compress the pictures so that they still look great, but load quickly. Try going to http://www.tucows.com to find a freeware or shareware program to use.  You can also compress pictures on line by going to a FREE service at http://www.spinwave.com .

3: Blinking messages. FORGET THEM. Blinking images are distracting. If you must use them, have them STOP after a VERY SHORT TIME.

4: Music is nice, but why force people to listen to it? Never ever embed music on your site that will play automatically. Put links to music on your web site. This way people can click on the links to play the music that they want to hear.

5: Load time. If it takes longer than 10 seconds to load a page, most people will leave your web site. Remember, there are still lots of people who don't have cable modems and are surfing at 56k or less.

6: Design your web site that it looks good if viewed in MS Internet Explorer OR Netscape Communicator. Approximately 80% of the world uses Internet Explorer, but don’t forget the rest of the people on the World Wide Web.
