Steps to making a Web Site

WebSiteClassroom.com

There are FOUR STEPS you need to do at the very beginning of making your website. After you have done these four steps, you need to consider these FIVE ELEMENTS. All websites are written in a language called Hypertext MarkUp Language (HTML) . You can go to PageTutor and take a free online class that does a very good job of explaining HTML coding.

Once you have gone through the above tutorial, you might want a quick BAREBONES htmlreference to look up what a particular HTML tag does. I don’t know of many people who make their Web Sites and Web Pages writing raw HTML code.  Most people use an HTML editor.

If you can use the MicroSoft Application program called, WORD, you can easily make a web page. I have my students type a word document, and then make this document into a Web Page. It’s easy. Once the Word document is done, go to FILE on the menu bar. Click on it and a menu drops down. Then scroll down to SAVE AS A WEB PAGE. The results is a web page.  However, the code that is produced is commonly called “dirty code”. This means that WORD adds a lot of code that is not necessary for the web page to work. If you are using MS WORD 200, you can get rid of all this dirty code by using a FREE OFFICE 2000 HTML FILTER. Microsoft has a history of changing where they put stuff on their website. If the above link does not work, go to http://www.microsoft.com and put HTML FILTER in the search box to locate its new location.

I have my students use a FREE editor called COMPOSER.  Composer is part of Netscape Communicator and is available for FREE from this download link.  Here are two FREE online tutorials you can take to learn how to use composer.  FIRST TUTORIAL and SECOND TUTORIAL. I suggest that you do both of them in the order presented.

One of the most popular, but not necessary one of the best,  WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors is a product called FRONT PAGE, by Microsoft.  One advantage to this program is that you can easily get a text book that will teach you how to use it. It is also comes with several of the Microsoft Office Suite packages. Here is a FRONTPAGE TUTORIAL.

My personal favorite WYSIWYG editor is a product called NetObjects Fusion. This program is a little harder to learn and there are not a lot of text books available, BUT it builds a web site FASTER and you have more control of the web page elements.

Here is a collection tools that I have put together for my students. You will find links to many useful resources, many of them FREE. COOLSTUFF
