A ListServ is nothing more then an electronic mailing list

WebSiteClassroom.com

Many people have a Christmas mailing list. This is a list of addresses of people that they send Christmas cards to.  I am very active in Lions International. If you are a member of a local Lions Club, they would several mailing lists of its membership. They use these lists to send you information and announcements via the United States Postal System. If  you want to start receiving a magazine such as NEWSWEEK, you call a special phone number or fill out a form and mail it. This act is called SUBSCRIBING to the publication. The publication puts you on a MAILING LIST.  After a certain interval of time, you will receive that magazine in the mail.   If you want to STOP receiving this magazine , you UNSUBSCRIBE.

In the world of the Internet, MAILING LISTS = LISTSERVS. ListServs offer an very effective way for people in a group to get information out to members of that group. Instead of printing a message on a piece of paper, putting it in an envelope, placing a postage stamp on the envelope and dropping it in the US Mail, the Internet LISTSERV uses Email to distribute the messages.

The Lions in District 5M1 have three (3) ListServs for its membership. One ListServ has a subscription list of about 400+ Lions in District 5M1.  This list is restricted, in that only members of this list can send an Email message to other members of this ListServ. This is an inexpensive way to announce an event or send a news article to all members. You simply go to the software that you use to send out Email messages.  In the TO: box, type in

Next, Type your message in the TEXT box. Then click on SEND.  If you are a member of this ListServ, in a matter of minutes, your message will appear in the mail boxes of everyone on this list. If you are not a member of this list, then your message will not go out . We also have an archive or history of all messages sent to the list. To view this archive, go to the Lions 5M1 homepage, located at http://www.lions5m1.org.  , then click on Additional Information on Lions (right hand column, down seven rows) then click on the ARCHIVE. If you are not on this ListServ, you can subscribe to it by going to the MORE INFORMATION ON LIONS link on this same table.  You will see a box that asks you if you want to subscribe, fill out the boxes and click on submit.

The second Lions District 5M1 ListServ is for people who want to be notified when we have posted the GOVERNOR’S NEWSLETTER on the 5M1 Website.  Instead of receiving a copy of the newsletter on pieces of paper, mailed to you by the US Post Office, you RECEIVE IN YOUR E-Mail, mailbox, NOTIFICATION that the Governor’s Newsletter is now available for viewing.  To find the newsletter. Go to the Lions 5M1 Website, located at http://www.lionss5m1.org.  Then click on the NEWS LETTER link. On the next page that appears on your screen, you will find links to twelve (12) newsletters by date of publication.  You must have a FREE program, called Acrobat Reader, to view the newsletter.  You can download it for FREE from this page.  Once you click on the Newsletter link, you will be downloading the newsletter file. Depending on the speed of your modem, this might take a few minutes. This GOVERNOR’s NEWSLETTER NOTIFICATION listserv is VERY RESTRICTED, only two (2) people can send out a message that the newsletter is now posted and ready for reading.  This will prevent anyone from sending out an incorrect message.

The third Listserv is for Cabinet members of District 5M1.  This allows the cabinet membership to receive timely notices, announcements, etc pertaining to District business.  ONLY cabinet members who are subscribed to this ListServ may send Email messages to the people on this mailing list.

The Lion’s of District 5M1 use Yahoo Groups for their FREE ListServ service. Google also has its own FREE ListServ service. You can go to Google Groups , click on CREATE NEW GROUPS to get your new List Serv.
