4 Steps to Building a Web Site

WebSiteClassroom.com

PLAN – browse the World Wide Web to see what other people  have done. Find something that you think looks good and print out the web site(s). Take a bunch of singles sheets of plain paper and put the items you want to appear on each web page on different pieces of paper. Draw a “tree diagram” on how you want all the web pages connected. This will determine your naviagation on the website.

WRITE – There are three basic items on each web page: Text, Graphics and Hyperlinks to other pages. You can create these web pages by writing HTML code OR using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor such as Netscape Composer, MS Frontpage or my favorite, Netobjects..  You can look at some tutorials on each of these editors by going to the CREATING page of this web site.  If you do not want to attempt this part of the process by yourself, visit a local high school or university and talk with someone in the business education OR computer science departments.  They should have a teacher who can possibly do this for you, or give you a name of student who would be able to help you produce the web site. In my web design classes, I am always looking for REAL LIFE projects for the students to do. By helping your Lions Club get a web site done, you are also helping me teach the students some practical uses for the skills that I am teaching. Another option is to use one of the web hosting sites that offer some very easy Web Based Web Site making software. You might try going one of the following:  www.homestead.com OR www.geocities.com which has a FREE option.

TEST – After you get the web site completed, TEST it.  Try opening the web site in both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. You will find that the same web site will probably look different in each of the web browsers.

PUBLISH – Once you have tested the web site, you will need to upload your creation to a web server.  You can pay for this service, or you can locate one of the many free services on the WWW. You can go to the CREATING web page on this web site and look under FREE STUFF to find one of these free hosting services.
